Last weekend we decided to paint our front door. It is something that we have been wanting to do for the past 4 years, but I tell ya, this nesting thing is pretty strong and Mister P. and I are tearing through our humongous list of to-dos before the baby arrives and finally crossed this one off.
We chose Sherwin William's 'Red Tomato' - just in time for Canada Day, although completely unintentional! We think we like it - but is it too bright? Too orangey? It is definitely growing on me and I think it looks pretty quirky beside our massive mess of daisies.

Domino Magazine Online Revival...
It seems to be a good couple of weeks for hearing about beloved magazines bringing their content back online. Last week it was exciting to hear about Gourmet and if you haven't heard yet, this week I read about Domino bringing back its archives to Brides.com. They have already started to put content up here -- hallelujah! Sadly neither one of these magazines will be back in print, but if you didn't save numerous back copies -- at least we can see their gorgeous content again digitally.

Modern Cabin
Wow! What a place this would be to relax and getaway. This modern cabin is called the Chicken Point Cabin and is located in Northern Idaho. Low maintenance materials were used and the space is intended to be a seamless extension to the natural setting. What a beauty! I can't get over that revolving wall of windows. It is designed by Olson Kundig Architects. (via the Contemporist)

Greece - Sounion
I have never stayed at a Greek resort, so I had no idea what to expect when D's grandmother picked the Grecotel at Cape Sounion. The location was clearly fabulous, but I had doubts about whether fancy resorts actually existed in Greece. While traveling alone, I had never spent more than 30 euros a night for a hotel room (and more frequently paid 10 euros for some distinctly questionable accommodations), so I am obviously not an expert.
I needn't have worried. We were greeted by a giant pear (which was actually part of a fruit platter, and accompanied by a bottle of wine) and robes. Apparently this is standard resort practice. Who knew?
We spent most of our time by the saline pool but we did make it down to the beach.
It wouldn't have been our vacation without a little weirdness. We all signed up for the sunset champagne cruise, which sounds super luxe. We were a little thrown when the captain couldn't get the boat into the cove, had us clamber out on the slippery rocks in a failed attempt to board, commandeered Dustin to act as deckhand, and finally (rather inventively) solved the whole problem by having us mount a broken down jet ski, three people at a time, that he tied to an inflatable canoe with a bit of twine and proceeded to row us out to the boat.
We made it to the boat, clutching our champagne for dear life. And it was worth it.
Totally different from any Greek experience in my repertoire, totally lovely. And a truly perfect way to spend the tail end of a busy trip, with a bit of relaxation after all the craziness a family trip entails.

FOX19 Press Release: Frank Marzullo Named Blog Czar
Have you ever seen the movie Anchorman? It is a classic for those in the television news business, who long for the day when the local anchorman or anchorwoman would give you the days news then spend there evenings buying new suits, having supper, and watching baseball games!! ( Wait you mean those days are over? ) Wow, I got into this business about 10 years to late!
With that said, new technology and progress allows us to interact with you more than ever before at FOX19.com. About 5 months ago we here on the FOX19 Morning News started this Morning News Blog. This is a place where Rob, Sheila, Meghan, Sara, and myself can share news on community events, discuss the days top stories, and share some personal stories with you about our thoughts on our city. However, as of late many of us have been slow to update the blog.
Those days are now over, as I have been appointed Morning News Blog Czar, by new FOX19 News Director Matt Miller. " We are very excited about this new opportunity for Frank, we feel that his energy, passion, and ability to spend more time on You-Tube then anyone else at the station will allow him to keep our Morning News Blog current and up to date", Miller says.
So, while I joke most of the time, this is actually no joke, I have really been put in charge of making sure my co-workers update this blog with fresh content every single day. So I have assigned my co-anchors each a day where it is there responsibility to update it by 7am, so this guarantees we will be current. I will then be held accountable if they do not get it done, so yes I am the Blog Czar. All I ask is respect and commitment, which I know 3 of the 4 them will give me, but one co-worker decided to slack on his first day. I was shocked to get a e-mail from my boss saying the blog was not updated yesterday. Guess whose day it was? You got it, ROB WILLIAMS! He was blogging about something he did Saturday, but still found other things to do then update his blog. This is unacceptable I told Rob, he is letting you all down! I will now have to watch over him and makesure he gets his updates done. Maybe, he should not spend as much time running and looking at TMZ.com. With that said, he promises from this point on to make sure he updates properly on his day.
So I hope you enjoy our postings and continue to interact with us right here on FOX19.com. I take my new post very seriously, but I just realized I am not getting any extra cash for my new post.

shayna bloomer belly update: 5ish months
It's been awhile since I've last updated my own baby bloomer bump! I'm just over 5 months with a baby BOY bloomer who has learned to happily kick and somersault inside me all day long! Yup...he's been brought up in the circus since the day he was conceived so I guess it's fitting! The silks are getting harder and harder to climb each time but I'm still able to get up there even if I have to huff and puff and grunt and groan! We'll see how long this lasts...I thought it would be the upper body strength that gave out but I didn't anticipate the belly getting in the way of lifting my knees!! But all is well and we are very excited to meet this little man and are thrilled that we get to meet J Bloom's little lady any day now! Fun times!

Greece - Aegina
The poor islands got short shrift from us. They certainly don't deserve it. Greece has a plethora of islands, all lovely in their own ways. Most people who have spent some time in Greece will have a favorite island or two - personally, my knees go weak for Milos, which is stunning and usually fairly quiet. Milos is in the Cyclades, so you're looking at a 5 - 8 hour ferry ride from Athens. If you have the time, go for it. Rent a car when you get there and zip all over the small island. They have stunning beaches and white rock formations and also some old catacombs that you can crawl around in, much to my delight.
We were short on time this trip, so we opted for Aegina instead, a mere 40 minute ferry ride from the mainland. We hired a cab to drive us up to the temple of Athena and he kindly made it a bit of a tour for us, stopping at a monastery on the way down. I was wearing a dress, so I didn't enter the monastery and frankly I was a little uncomfortable even standing in front to get some pictures. Rules vary from monastery to monastery. Some won't allow women at all, some will but require various standards of dress, some will even provide cover ups. As a rule, dress modestly and bring a long skirt to wear while you walk around, to avoid any hint of disrespect.
It was incredibly hot, so we stopped in a small cafe and drank frappes under a giant fig tree.
Frappes in Greece are a thing of joy. Nescafe (I was skeptical too, at first) is whipped frantically with a bit of milk and then it all somehow coalesces into this foamy, icy deliciousness. During summer some cafes offer them as ice cream floats. Highly recommend.
If you make it to an island, you should probably gorge yourself on seafood. I never order seafood in Athens, even if I do happen to find a restaurant that serves it. Greece prides itself on fresh food, and you won't see many seafood options unless you are near a good port. In fact, most restaurants print disclosures on the menu, so there will be an asterisk next to some seafood options and it tells you that they were made from frozen seafood. I don't know if this is legally required or just niceness, but I appreciate it.
At a port, find the fish market (easily identifiable by the smell) and then choose a restaurant nearby. Choices will vary from island to island, but you'll generally find whole fried whitefish (very lightly battered, eat them like french fries, bones and all) and mussels saganaki, which is fresh mussels + cheese. Keep your mind open and ask the waiter to help you order and you won't be disappointed.

Tuckers Restaurant in OTR
I have heard of Tuckers, but never been until recently.
Hey it's Rob. Tuckers is located in the 1600 block of Vine Street. It's just east of Findlay Market. The restaurant has been around since 1946. I decided to give it try this past Saturday after running with a friend who is training me for the Columbus Marathon.
I walked into Tuckers and noticed it's not that big. Then you notice this place is a joint in the best possible way. Nothing fancy. Just great food and friendly service and a flat top grill full of a variety of breakfast items.
I decided to have the pancakes and grits. Our server was friendly and fast. We did have to wait a little for food, but it was worth it. The pancakes are thick, fluffy pillows of carbohydrates. The grits were creamy like polenta, but with attitude. I left there feeling full and satisfied but disappointed. Slightly upset that it took me so long to find a place GQ Magazine said was one of the best diners in the county.
Tuckers is open 9am to 3pm Monday through Saturday and Sundays from 10am to 2pm.

Music Monday : Wax Tailor & Charlie Winston
I hope you had a nice weekend! Do anything fun? I took off a little early last week here on the blog because I attended the EVO conference -- it was amazing and I hope to talk about it soon.
For Music Monday, I am throwing a little hip hop your way because I came across this sweet motion graphics music video called "I Own You" by the French band Wax Tailor (featuring Charlie Winston). Not only is the video super creative, but the lyrics are thought-provoking about how media and technology has influenced the way we live our lives. Not Just a Walk in the Woods
I've been hiking before, but not like this. Hi it's Meghan:)
My friend is a avid hiker/climber and he's talked about his adventures. This past weekend I went with him to Red River Gorge. It was fun yet scary.
We hiked for close to 4 hours and climbed to an elevation of 1,700 feet. Oh and we weren't on the main trails! I guess there are side trials that only the experienced hikers know about. We were scaling rocks and squeezing through caves.
I defiantly didn't expect that level of hiking but I loved it and the views were amazing. I can't wait to go back.
But not sure if it'll be anytime soon. By now you've probably heard that a bear attacked a hiker there the same weekend I was walking the trails. Luckily all I saw was a lizard and a squirrel:) Hopefully the catch the bear soon!(I'm super sweaty in the picture..what a workout!)
The weekend, briefly
Grocery shopping! Cleaning! Cooking actual food! Baskets and baskets and baskets of laundry! Although I actually can't take any credit for the laundry, because D did all of it. Basically, we were busy and now we can actually live like semi-civilized people again.
I fortified myself with tea on our balcony, which I realize looks a little bit like a rainforest from this angle. Sadly, it isn't.
We tended our little balcony garden, which means I randomly try things like attacking the soil with a pair of garden shears in an attempt to break it up a bit. I think that's called aerating. Otherwise I may have dead herbs next week. Pretty much 50/50.
But the biggest news of the weekend is that I finally got up the courage to attempt to poach an egg sans egg poacher. I know, I know. It's basically just sliding an egg into hot water and letting it sit for 4 minutes. Sometimes the simplest things seem scary. In desperation (poached eggs are one of my favorite foods), I took a deep breath, followed Deb's instructions and then proceeded to eat poached eggs for the rest of the weekend.
I feel pretty accomplished. And full.
